Why do IGCC project
The natures of IGCC
Advantages: is combined cycle, high efficiency and more potential for efficiency increasing; high efficiency for solving pollutions; Water saving; Can be combined with hydrogen production, liquefaction and other energy system.
Disadvantages: complex system; developing technologies; high cost of implementation
China needs IGCC
Combination of IGCC and CCS are the most efficient method of solving the issues of energy saving and emission reduction.
IGCC is the most important base for the advanced coal-based energy system (power, H2 and liquid fuel) in the future; for coal gasification system (Natural gas, petroleum etc.)
China needs IGCC due to its energy structure and sustainable strategy
China's power market overview
In 2000, the total amount of power generation was 319GW, and in 2005, it was 430GW, and according to the increased trend for the power generation in China, until 2010, the total amount of power generation will achieve 580-600GW, and in 2020, the amount will up to 900-950GW in China. Therefore, following the increased trend of power generation in China, the amount of CO2 emission will increase as well. According to the calculation, China's CO2 emission achieves at the amount of 27Gt, and it is ranking at NO.2 in the world. Therefore, China launched that “Comparing the amount of CO2 emission in 2005, China target 40-45% CO2 emission cuts by 2020.”
Chinese Market Potential
- Huge IGCC market demand and much more room of supply, in terms of 70% power utilization in coal resources and lacking of the advanced clean coal technologies in power generation sector.
- Lacking of the successful experiences and solutions in technology (IGCC and CCS) and equipments (gas turbine, gasifier and pipeline)
- Rich in coal resources and lack of oil and gas
- Profitable policies for foreign investors, Chinese government released the relevant policies to energy sector since the 11th 5-year plan (2006-2010), and now government pays attention in the energy saving and emission reduction sector.
- Consumption potential: China and U.S. are the biggest power consumption in the world.
- Advantages in the current economic and financial environment
